Coleman was born at Blackpool Lancashire. She attended Arnold School Blackpool as head girl, and she received every A grade on her A level exams. When discussing her character from Emmerdale, Coleman expressed regret for being unable to attend a college. When she was at school, Coleman was a part of a theatre company called In Yer Space with whom she was a part of the Edinburgh Festival in the play Crystal Clear. Her performance was rewarded, and the play received favorable reviews. Coleman got the Emmerdale character Jasmine Thomas after auditioning with the drama school. Coleman was awarded two awards in 2007. At the British Soap Awards she was awarded Best Newcomer. Also, in the National Television Awards she was named the the Most Popular Newcomer. It was the British Soap Awards 2009 nominated her in both categories: Best Actress - Sexiest Feminine and the category for Best Dramatic Performance. Coleman received her TV Choice Awards nomination for Best Actress. Steven Moffat, the producer of Doctor Who confirmed in a 21st March 2012 press conference that Coleman will play Matt Smith's companion after Karen Gillan left. Moffat chose her for the role due to her being the most effective in her interactions with Smith and spoke more quickly than the actor.
