Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman was the replacement for Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor after Arthur Darvill left the series she would play the role alongside Matt Smith. Moffat chose to choose her for the role because she has the most chemistry Smith. Additionally, she was faster than Smith.
